Process
Each film has its own unique journey, and set of challenges. Upon joining a project, I first have several conversations, through Zoom, phone or in person, with the director and creative team. Once I completely understand their vision and approach, I will then fully immense myself into the material - screening full interviews and verité, pulling selects, building scenes, and discovering new themes. I will strategize with the additional editors, AEs and/or story producers on screening, discovering and building the story. Through storyboarding scenes, ideas, themes and more, we will develop and play around with the structure.
Together, we will discover and develop story elements, scenes, themes and more to build the rough cut. As we move scenes around, and screen cuts, the story will only get stronger. Through this collaboration, we will take the captured footage, interviews and/or archival pieces and build a living and breathing film: the final cut.
My perspectives as a queer, LatinX, first-generation filmmaker guide my editing process. I approach the participants and story by observing what stands out. Within the edit room, I strive for equity and inclusion by uplifting minority talent and creating a comfortable environment. Through this inclusion of diverse voices, we create a safe space to develop authentic and powerful stories.
Remote Workflow
I work in both AVID and Premiere, and have utilized Jump Desktop and other tools for remote-editing workflows. While based out of San Francisco, I have worked remotely from New York, Los Angeles, London, Mexico City and Playa Del Carmen utilizing fast/fiber internet connections and VPN.
I have conducted live edit sessions with clients using NDI setups including this teranex box workflow. I look forward to discussing your projects needs and remote workflow setup.
